The Ashtavinayak yatra visits eight ancient Ganesha temples spread across Pune, Ahilyanagar and Raigad districts. Our complete Ashtavinayak guide covers the history and significance of each temple; this post is the practical companion. It answers the question most families ask: can we do all eight in a weekend? The answer is yes, with an early start, a sensible route and realistic expectations about crowds and driving time.

The Eight Temples and the Traditional Order

Tradition holds that the yatra begins and ends at Morgaon. The traditional sequence is:

  • 1. Shri Mayureshwar, Morgaon (Pune district): the start and end of the yatra
  • 2. Shri Siddhivinayak, Siddhatek (Ahilyanagar district), on the Bhima river
  • 3. Shri Ballaleshwar, Pali (Raigad district)
  • 4. Shri Varadvinayak, Mahad village near Khopoli (Raigad district)
  • 5. Shri Chintamani, Theur (Pune district)
  • 6. Shri Girijatmaj, Lenyadri (Pune district), in a cave on a hillside
  • 7. Shri Vighneshwar, Ozar (Pune district)
  • 8. Shri Mahaganapati, Ranjangaon (Pune district)

Many pilgrims follow this order strictly; many others plan the most practical road route, which is what this itinerary does. Follow whichever is right for your family's practice.

Is Two Days Realistic?

Yes, but it is a lot of driving: roughly 650 to 750 km in total depending on your start and route, plus darshan queues and the climb at Lenyadri. Two days works best with your own vehicle and driver, an early start on both days, and a weekday or a non-festival weekend. On Sankashti Chaturthi, Angarki, Ganesh Chaturthi and Maghi Ganeshotsav, queues can be several hours at each temple, so allow three days or avoid those dates.

Distances below are approximate road distances and will vary with your exact route.

Day 2 is the long one. If you prefer a gentler pace, end day 2 after Lenyadri and visit Mahad and Pali as a separate day trip; they are close to the Mumbai-Pune expressway and easy to combine with a weekend near Khopoli or Lonavala.

  • Day 1, early morning: Pune to Theur (about 25 km)
  • Day 1: Theur to Morgaon (about 60-70 km)
  • Day 1: Morgaon to Siddhatek (about 70 km, via Daund side)
  • Day 1: Siddhatek to Ranjangaon (about 80-90 km); overnight near Ranjangaon or Shirur
  • Day 2, early morning: Ranjangaon to Ozar (about 70-80 km)
  • Day 2: Ozar to Lenyadri (about 15 km); climb to the cave temple
  • Day 2: Lenyadri to Mahad near Khopoli (about 170-190 km, via Pune or Lonavala)
  • Day 2: Mahad to Pali (about 40 km), then back to Pune (about 110 km)

Two-Day Plan From Mumbai

  • Day 1, early morning: Mumbai to Mahad near Khopoli (about 80 km)
  • Day 1: Mahad to Pali (about 40 km)
  • Day 1: Pali to Theur via Pune (about 130-150 km)
  • Day 1: Theur to Morgaon (about 60-70 km); overnight near Morgaon or Baramati
  • Day 2, early morning: Morgaon to Siddhatek (about 70 km)
  • Day 2: Siddhatek to Ranjangaon (about 80-90 km)
  • Day 2: Ranjangaon to Ozar (about 70-80 km), then Lenyadri (about 15 km)
  • Day 2: Lenyadri to Mumbai via Malshej Ghat (about 160-180 km)

The Climb at Lenyadri

Lenyadri is the only Ashtavinayak temple in a cave, and the only one that needs a climb: a few hundred steps up the hillside to a group of early Buddhist rock-cut caves, one of which houses Shri Girijatmaj. The caves are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, which charges a small entry ticket.

Allow about an hour for the climb, darshan and descent, more for elderly family members. Palanquin services are often available at the base for those who cannot climb. Visit early in the day; the steps are hot in the afternoon sun.

Practical Tips

  • Start each day by 5:30 or 6 am; darshan lines are shortest early
  • Check temple timings for your dates, especially for midday closures and aarti times
  • Most temples have dress expectations; modest clothing works everywhere
  • Carry water, snacks and cash; prasad stalls and small eateries are found at each temple
  • Footwear is left outside: carry socks for hot stone floors in summer
  • Book your overnight stay in advance on weekends
  • Hire a driver who knows the route; several temples are on smaller roads

Best Time for the Yatra

October to February is the most comfortable season, with mild weather for long days in the car and climbing at Lenyadri. The monsoon is beautiful, especially around Pali, Mahad and Lenyadri, but roads can be slow. Summer days are hot; plan Lenyadri for the early morning. Festival days are spiritually special but very crowded.
